START research assistants present findings on their work on the Economics of Academic Publishing at 2024 CUGH & win the Lancet Global Health Best Student Posters Competition

In a 2023 engagement with the Gates Foundation (GF), the START Center explored the landscape of Open Access (OA) Article-Processing Charges (APCs), and the role that the GF plays in funding researchers and APCs to better understand the true cost of publishing academic research, and to purpose potential transformative models for ways to effectively execute a sustainable open access model of publishing. In December 2023, two of the START research assistants involved in this work, Ana Krause and Nicole Asa, successfully submitted an abstract to present a poster on this work at the 2024 Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) international conference, hosted Las Angeles, CA in March 2024. The poster abstract was titled, “The Economics and Inequities of Open Access Publishing,” the abstract can be found on the CUGH 2024 Conference Website. These research assistants received special recognition at the conference for their work, and won the Lancet Global Health – CUGH Best Student Poster Competition in the Decolonizing – Reforming Global Health, Equity, Justice, Global Health Education and Research category.
