Samuel "Sam" Mpinganjira is a PhD student in Implementation Science in the Dept. of Global Health at the University of Washington. He completed his medical training in 2018 at the University of Malawi, College of Medicine (now called Kamuzu University of Health Sciences) and a Masters of Vaccinology and Drug Development at the University of Siena, Italy in 2023. Prior to joining START, he worked at the WHO's Malawi Country Office as an Immunization Officer and Epidemiologist, where he contributed to Polio Outbreak Response, and introduction and routinization of TCV, COVID-19, and malaria vaccines between 2022 and 2024. His research includes implementation of evidence-based interventions against infectious diseases, mainly malaria, TB, COVID-19 and HIV. Sam hopes to build capacity in optimal implementation of evidence-based interventions (including new vaccine introduction) against infectious diseases, particularly amongst the vulnerable populations in LMICs. Additionally, he is interested in vaccine clinical trials, conducting program, economic, and impact evaluations to ensure evidence-based interventions are effectively contributing to change in the epidemiology of infectious diseases, and are cost effective.
