The Family Planning (FP) team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has an investment portfolio focused on adolescents and youth that strives to meet the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents. Youth have limited access to accurate and appealing sexual reproductive health information. With increased mobile phone and internet access and use, online and mobile platforms offer opportunities to reach youth at scale to address lack of information and misinformation. The Foundation is interested in exploring evidence of improving ASRH behaviors and outcomes through such platforms. The START team was engaged to conduct a literature review, build a framework to deepen understanding of mobile platforms in this space, and identify gaps in evidence related to these topics. The project was divided into six phases:
- Review BGMF resources for baseline understanding of topic
- Conduct a comprehensive review (databases used: PubMed, BSC, Embase)
- Conduct a grey literature/case study review
- Interview expert stakeholders
- Build framework to articulate findings from evidence and interviews
- Identify gaps and way forward
Final deliverables included:
- PowerPoint presentation covering literature review findings, interview findings, case study analysis, and the framework
- Article tracker that contains team analysis of academic articles
- Program tracker that contains team analysis of grey literature and case studies
- Full article library listing all literature (academic and grey) that informed the presentation and framework
