Existing Evidence on Barriers to Vaccinating Zero-Dose Children

Existing Evidence on Barriers to Vaccinating Zero-Dose Children

The Strategic Analysis, Research & Training (START) Center was engaged by the Global Delivery Program Team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to review existing evidence on barriers to vaccinating zero-dose children—commonly defined as those that have not received any routine vaccine—and interventions for finding and reaching them.

The goal of this project was to gather evidence through literature reviews and key informant interviews on why these communities are underserved, and identify potential interventions that can be leveraged to generate appropriate programmatic strategies to reach zero-dose children. Specifically, the project aimed to identify barriers to vaccination for communities with zero-dose children, generate evidence from different health and non-health sectors that successfully find and reach zero-dose children, and understand the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of these interventions.
